with Román Liera and Damani White-Lewis
april 29, 2022
In this workshop, Prof. Román Liera and Prof. Damani White-Lewis presented their and other scholars’ research on the role of typical faculty hiring criteria and practices that cement racial and ethnic inequalities in the professoriate.
In the first part of this session, Liera and White-Lewis frame three aspects of “whiteness” in faculty hiring: niceness, fit, and hierarchical networks. Based on the scholarship they present, Liera and White-Lewis suggest changes in faculty hiring that would centralize non-discrimination on the basis of race.
