2024-25 Role: Special Advisor to the Dean for Faculty Mentoring Programs

Desirée Garcia will serve as Special Advisor for Faculty Mentoring Programs in the Office of the Dean of the Faculty of Arts and Sciences in the academic year 2024-2025. Her efforts will be focused on new program and resource development, especially those that particularly benefit tenure-track faculty whose advancement is most at risk. Prof. Garcia's responsibilities will include:

  • soliciting information from and responding to the unique needs of tenure-track faculty whose rates of advancement suggest career challenges in Arts and Sciences;

  • connecting these faculty with relevant tenured faculty for short-term mentoring engagements;

  • organizing and hosting at least two professional-development events per term; and

  • identifying, collecting, and creating a repository of resources that will be of ongoing value to tenure-track faculty, including the unique interests of those whose rates of tenure and retention suggest their advancement and retention are at risk.

Desired outcomes include (1) the establishment of an affinity group and sense of community for at-risk tenure-track faculty; (2) the mobilization of resources for helping tenure-track scholars understand and navigate the promotion and tenure process; and (3) a sustainable model for facilitating ongoing mentoring relationships.
